Software for Electronic Locks

Before we start talking about the software for electronic locks, I want to discuss the hardware. For an electronic door lock, it does matter how good the software is, the lock must have a good mechanical component. If the lock is considered “high Security” then it must meet or exceed certain mechanical standards. For example an electronic door lock must move a bolt into the locked position into the door jam. This action might be controlled by the software, but the hardware will provide the physical security.

The manufacturer will design the basic function of locking or unlocking the door lock. After that each manufacturer will differ in the added features. Let’s discuss some these features:

Access Control: This is where the software can track all entries and exits through a certain door locked with an electronic lock. This information is downloaded into a database and stored. The control part is that a certain user can be locked out. For that matter all users can be locked out. User access can also be controlled by time. For example access is only granted between the hours of 8am and 5pm.

Audit: The administrator can go back into stored history and find out who opened a certain door on a certain date and time. So you not only can control access, but you can go back into history if there is a question. For example, drugs were missing from the drug room, by looking back into history an access map can be created as to who unlocked that door.

Auto Open: The electronic lock can be programmed to unlock at a certain time and then relock at a certain time. An example would be unlock at 8am and relock at 5pm. The lock can also be programmed to unlock if there is a fire alarm.

Users: Many users can have access to a certain door, but their access can be controlled by date and time. For example most users will have 8-5 access; however supervisors will have 24 hour access. The possibilities can be endless. All access will be tracked and will be available for later audit.

Different manufacturers will have different variations of the above and will add features of their own. Features such as mobile functions, Wi-Fi with Bluetooth, home automation and apps are examples of some of the features that can be added to the software.

An electronic lock is a true partnership of mechanical and electronic.
